A group of Italian sailors saved a Labrador puppy who got lost at sea.
Members of the RYCC Savoia were boating in the Gulf of Naples off the coast of Italy when they saw a puppy struggling in the middle of the sea. The poor pup was paddling toward them as he struggled to stay afloat in the open waters.
“We approached, we were sailing and maneuvering was not easy,” Massimiliano Cappa, the sporting club’s director, told La Repubblica. “He was visibly exhausted, his legs almost paralyzed by the cold. He trembled and wept.”
The sailors did their best to dry the pup and hugged the pooch to keep him warm.
Once the group got back on shore they found out that the Labrador, whose name is Noodle, had fallen overboard during a ferry ride from Naples to the island of Ischia, about 20 miles west.
Noodle’s owner, Mario Di Meglio, says he was taking his new pet puppy home when he slipped his leash and fell overboard.
Di Megio says he immediately alerted the ferry’s crew but they refused to stop – telling him that Noodle had likely already drowned.
Luckily, the sailors found the poor pup about half an hour later.
Noodle has since been reunited with his owner and is now doing well.
The ferry company has apologized for the incident and launched an internal investigation.
