A marine has adopted the bomb-sniffing Labrador who saved his life in Afghanistan! They were reunited today after four long years apart! (Scroll down for video)
Marine Lance Corporal Jeff DeYoung says he owes his life to black Labrador Retriever, Cena.
When DeYoung was given the opportunity to reunite with the Labrador he said it was like, “all my Christmases rolled into one.”
DeYoung and Cena served in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010, WCPO-TV reported. The Lab sniffed out explosive devices ahead of Marines.
Both DeYoung and his wife told WXYZ-TV that if it had not been for Cena sniffing out roadside bombs, DeYoung would likely not have made it home.
DeYoung and Cena have not seen each other for four years. When he heard that Cena had suffered a hip injury and would be retired, he jumped at the chance to adopt is Labrador comrade.
Man and dog were reunited at the Detroit Metro airport on Thursday.
DeYoung was excited that Cena appeared to remember him.
“I know when (DeYoung) got back, he had a lot of separation issues,” his wife said. “I think it’s going to be really good for him.”
She added that things will be crowded in the DeYoung household; Cena joins a growing family that includes the husband and wife, two small kids and a third child on the way.
