Lots of families face the dilemma of trying to find a dog that’s good around children while still being able to guard and protect the family. Well, if you’re one of those people, your search is over. A Labrador Retriever is the perfect dog for you.
Labs are part of the family
Because they’re so loyal and family oriented, yet not aggressive, a Labrador makes an excellent guard dog. They can easily be trained to bark at any stranger who comes to your door.
On the other hand, Labs are some of the most relaxed dogs you’ll ever find. That’s one of the reasons why they’re so good with children. Also, they’re very tolerant as well which is important if they’re going to be in a house full of kids all the time.
A benefit to getting a Labrador puppy while your child is still young is that they will develop a love of dogs early on.
How to train your Lab puppy to be around children
Labs, like children, have lots of energy. That’s why it’s extremely important for you to walk them regularly. If you don’t, they can be a bit hard to manage. But, again, that’s a problem that can be easily handled with a daily walk.
Also, in order to be around children, it’s important that your Lab knows the command “give”. Why? Well, what if they pick up one of your kid’s toys. If they know the “give” command, getting the toy back won’t be a problem. However, if they don’t know it, you’ll soon find a lot of chewed up toys.
Practice the “give” command with a dog toy. Simply throw the toy to your dog or give it to them. After that, call them back to you and say “give” in a pleasant but firm voice while removing the toy from their mouth.
Eventually, your Labrador Retriever will get so good at it that they’ll just drop whatever is in their mouth when you say give. It’s important that you don’t turn this training into a tug of war game though. If you do that, you’ll actually be teaching your Lab to “keep” rather than “give”.
In time, you will understand the bond that Labrador Retrievers and children have.
