In Australia, a Labrador mix is lucky to be alive after tennis ball got stuck in his throat.
On Monday, six-year-old Rocco was playing a game of catch when the incident happened.
Tony Hall, Rocco’s owner, and his daughter Caroline rushed the pooch to Allambie Veterinary Clinic.
An X-ray revealed the tennis ball lodged in the back of the Labrador mix’s throat –blocking the majority of his airway.
Dr. Faon Mudie was forced to work extremely fast to save Rocco’s life. He feared his airway would become completely blocked from the swelling in his throat surrounding the ball.
The veterinarian used a “pair of grabbers” to dislodge and get the ball from Rocco’s throat while she used her other hand to get underneath the ball to push it up.
“We were so lucky they brought him when they did … it’s not something common,” Dr. Mundie said.
Hall said the tennis ball likely slipped through to Rocco’s throat because it was shorn, smaller, and smoother than regular tennis balls.
Now, Rocco is doing fine. The Labrador still loves playing with balls despite what happened.
“We always said he should be in goal for Australia, he’s that good at catching a ball,” he said.
