A UK Labrador guide dog who saved her family from a house fire has been hailed a hero with a national award.
Labrador Retriever Tillie was handed the Beyond the Call award for alerting her family to the fire.
Nicky Askew, the hero guide dog’s owner, says she believes that the loyal Lab was trying her best to get everyone to safety.
Askew delivered an acceptance speech at the 2015 Guide Dogs Awards 2015 event. The event celebrates the work of the Guide Dogs charity and honors the passion of those who help them improve the lives of people living with sight loss.
In her speech, Askew said Tillie became agitated when she noticed the fire while the family was upstairs getting ready for bed. The guide dog alerted her family even before the fire alarm detected the fire.
“Tillie woke my children up by whimpering and shaking,” the 45-year-old said. “We went downstairs so that I could take her outside and that’s when we saw the flames in the dining room. There is no doubt in my mind that Tillie was trying to get us out of the house that night, she knew something was wrong and wouldn’t rest until my family and I were safe. I feel so proud and lucky to have her.”
