A woman found a sweet, innocent Labrador mix stuck in a tire.
The Lab was next to the trash dumpster at her apartment complex.
She took the dog to the Houston Fire Department Station 51 where it took the firefighters more than an hour to free the frightened Lab puppy.
The rescue operation was caught on camera.
“We tried to put soap on the side of its head, wet its head slide it out. It wouldn’t come out.”, said Senior Capt. Gregory Leonard.
So they used tools to free the pup instead. The firefighters tried to keep the puppy calm while they carefully went to work.
“We really cut very carefully because any kind of pressure on the dog’s neck could have snapped its neck or killed it,” Capt. Leonard said.
The firefighters first tried using a saw but the vibrations scared the puppy.
They eventually freed the puppy with the help of the Jaws of Life –the same tool they’d use to extricate a person from a vehicle.
“We all love pets and we didn’t want the dog to get hurt at all,” Capt. Leonard said.
Firefighters later named her Lugnut.
“It just goes with what happened to the dog. Got it’s head caught in the tire and we just thought it was appropriate,” the senior captain said.
He added that his last encounter with a dog hadn’t gone as well. Last year at a fire scene he was badly bitten by a frightened dog he was trying to rescue.
