Does your Labrador love peanut butter?
Not all peanut butter is safe for dogs! Beware of peanut butter containing xylitol!
Xylitol, an artificial sweetener used in many foods, including peanut butter, yogurt, toothpaste and chewing gum, is safe for humans, but potentially deadly for dogs!
If a dog ingests a xylitol-laden product, it can cause seizures, liver failure and worse, death!
Most peanut butters do not contain xylitol but its use as a low-calorie alternative to sugar is increasing. This means dog owners have to watch out for brands that contain the substance.
Peanut butter brands that contain xylitol include Go Nuts, Co., Krush Nutrition, Nuts ‘N More and P28 Foods.
Symptoms of xylitol poisoning in dogs include muscle weakness, seizures, vomiting, tremors and difficulty in walking. These symptoms usually begin within 15-30 minutes of consumption.
If you suspect your dog has eaten something that contains xylitol should contact a veterinarian or call the Pet Poison Helpline.
