Vladimir Putin has denied using his black Labrador to scare Angela Merkel at their first meeting. The incident happened in 2007.
It has been rumored that despite being briefed about the German Chancellor’s cynophobia – the fear of dogs – the Russian president still had his Labrador, Connie, brought into the meeting.
Now the Russian President has dismissed claims that he used his beloved dog to try and unnerve Mrs Merkel during the all-important first meeting between the two heads of state.
“I did not know anything about that, “Putin said in an interview with Bild. “She is very sincere and highly professional. In any case, I think the level of trust between us is very high.”
According to reports, Putin even asked Merkel if she was comfortable with dogs.
“The dog does not bother you, does she? She’s a friendly dog and I’m sure she will behave herself, ”Putin reportedly said the moment his dog entered the room, according to Mail Online.
“No, she doesn’t eat journalists after all,” Merkel responded with a joke.
The German chancellor may have been smiling and laughing but photos from the meeting show how hard she was trying to hide her fear.
Putin said Connie was a friendly dog and was a gift from Russia’s current Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu, back in 2000.
The black Labrador died passed away in 2014 at the age of 15.
