This dog has a unique skill! Bear the Labrador has been helping the Seattle Police solve crimes against children by sniffing electronics!
Bear can sniff out cell phones, laptops, tablets, micro SD cards, and more. The Labrador dog is one of only three dogs in the United States who can locate digital media devices.
“Seattle police electronic storage detection dog” is Bear’s official title, and he is assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
In August, Bear was one of the dogs used in the arrest of Subway pitchman Jared Fogle on child porn charges. The awesome dog was able to sniff out additional evidence that wasn’t discovered in the initial search.
It has only been six weeks since Bear started working with the Seattle Police Department and already he has been deployed five times. Detective Ian Polhemus, his handler, said Bear has been successful every single time.
“Anytime he actually indicates that he’s found something, and he’s successful in that, I reach into a food pouch and I give him some kibble,” Polhemus proudly said. “For him it’s all a game, but it’s also an opportunity for him to get his daily food.”
Bear’s training took one year. Training focused on sniffing out and tracking the chemical component that is consistent in electronic devices. Polhemus says he continues to work with Bear every day to make sure his special skills stay intact.
Way to go, Bear!
