5 Home Remedies To Get Rid of Dog Fleas

Is your Labrador infested with fleas? Fleas are horrible little critters and once infected, it can be hard to get rid of them. These wingless bloodsucking parasitic insect can cause allergies and various other skin problems in your pet. We have put together five home remedies to get rid of fleas on dogs.

Tips To Get Rid of Dog Fleas

Fleas can get under your Labrador’s skin, and they can cause health problems if they are left sucking the blood of your dog for long. Once one of your dogs gets fleas, it is highly likely that all your other dogs may be infected as well. And yes, fleas bite humans, too. If your Labrador or any of your dogs caught these wingless bloodsucking parasites, here are some home remedies you can try to get rid of dog fleas.

Get Rid of Dog Fleas: Make Homemade Flea Spray

This spray is herbal and much less risky than the chemical-filled sprays available in stores. To get rid of dog fleas, you must first prepare the following ingredients:

  • 6 thinly sliced lemons
  • 3 sprigs rosemary
  • 1 liter boiling water
  • 3-4 drops geranium essential oil

Place lemons into a large bowl. Finely chop the rosemary and add to the lemons. Pour the boiling water into the bowl. Add geranium oil. Cover and leave overnight. Drain the water into a sprayer the next morning. Spray the mixture onto furniture, bedding, and carpets to repel fleas. This will successfully make your home free from fleas and your pet is free from the threat of having them.

Get Rid of Dog Fleas: Use Candles, Dish soap

This remedy helps bring fleas out of the furniture and the carpets, but it is one of the least safe remedies for a household with children.

Using a shallow dish or bowl, fill with water then add a few drops of dish soap. Place the dish in the center of the room, then place a small tea candle in the center or near the dish. Light the candle. The fleas will be attracted to the light and will jump in the water. They will get stuck and die there. Again, this is not safe if children or animals are allowed to roam freely through the home at night.

Rosemary Helps Get Rid of Dog Fleas

This remedy works best for a mild flea infestation. The rosemary can be used in a number of ways – as a powder, oil, or an after-bath rinse. To make a rosemary flea powder that can help get rid of dog fleas, you must first prepare the following ingredients.

  • Rosemary
  • Wormwood
  • Rue
  • Peppermint
  • Fennel

Gather equal parts of all the ingredients and grind them together in the coffee grinder. Grind them to turn the mix into a fine powder. Sprinkle the mixture onto the carpets, furniture, and anywhere that might hold fleas. This is only a repellent and keeps your houses protected from fleas. However, it does not kill fleas.

Diatomaceous Earth Helps Get Rid of Dog Fleas

This substance is a natural solution used for generations to get rid of dog fleas. It is a fine powder produced from fossilized algae. It kills and removes pet fleas when used in the following manner.

  • Vacuum all carpets and wash as much bedding as possible in the hot water.
  • Sprinkle the substance wherever fleas might hide: bedding, couches, mattresses, dog bedding, and carpets.
  • Leave the substance on the surface for 12-48 hours. Vacuum up the substance and then throw out the vacuum bag to get rid of any surviving fleas.

Warning: Do not use this substance directly on dogs; it could dry out the skin.

Gets Rid of Dog Fleas: Salt Dries Out, Kills Fleas

Common salt is an effective ingredient to remove fleas. It dries out fleas and kills them. However, salt requires a few days to remove these bloodsucking parasites. Simply sprinkle salt over the carpets, couches, and dog bedding, and then leave it for 1 to 3 days. Vacuum the salt away and dispose of the vacuum bag. This method may not work if the infestation is extensive, but it helps reduce the number of fleas in your home to a considerable extent.
